October
March
The
final game of the carpet season took place on 30th March with the head being
closely studied by Jim Dempster, George McLaughlin, Gillies Lang and George
Gordon. The prizegiving for the various competitions (dominoes and pool as well
as bowls) followed, in which Gillies Lang showed
his mis-spent youth by winning both the singles and pairs of the pool
competition, and new bowls singles champion, Walter Irvine (third from right)
stopped John Campbell (2nd right) from winning for the umpteenth time.
April
The green
was opened on 11th April by President
David Linley, with the first jack
being thrown by his daughter, Shona . His wife Liz is fed up opening the green as it
is the third time David has served as President, and she was in the kitchen
making the delicious soup we had later. Although the weather was rather windy
and chilly, 8 ends were played and the members and guests enjoyed the day.
August
Finals
Day (the last Saturday in August) saw only three singles finals being played-
the
under 70 ("boys cup") between Ian Bowie and Alex Sinclair (from left in
picture); the Championship between Frank Kennedy and George McLaughlin and the
Vice President's cup between Willie Dick and John Huntley. As can be seen from
the scoreboards in the picture, all three matches were closely contested before
Ian Bowie, Willie Dick and Frank Kennedy emerged as the winners.
Trophies
were presented by President David Linley after the games.
Two other finals took place on Monday evening, when in the Rinks
final Alistair Gunn's rink of Jim Gilchrist, Alistair Craig and George
McLaughlin obtained revenge for last year's defeat by Colin Beattie's rink of
Bob Ewing, Gillies Lang and Alistair Linley. Frank and Christina Kennedy
defeated Michelle and Douglas Orr in the Mixed Pairs Final.
On
Tuesday afternoon Frank Kennedy continued his run of good form by winning the
pairs title with partner Bill Milroy after a close match
with Alistair Gunn and Stuart Johnston.
O
On Friday evening Alistair Gunn retained the senior trophy by
defeating David Macdonald.
The
final "finals day" took place on a lovely afternoon on Sunday, when Alex
Sinclair narrowly defeated Tom O'Neill in the Isle of Skye trophy.
Jim Macphie beat David Macdonald in the 2 bowl singles.
David Macdonald obtained revenge by beating Jim in the Talbot
Crosbie final played on the same afternoon.
The triples final resulted in a win for Bill Gilfillan, George
McLaughlin and Alistair Gunn after a close
contest with Jack McLachlan, Lindsay Young and John Robertson.
Frank
Kennedy completed a fine season by beating Ian Bowie in the President's Cup, to
win his fourth title.
September
Another season draws to a close, and was very poor as far as weather
went, with quite a few aggregate Monday evenings being cancelled, and the green
suffering from flooding. We finished in our usual bottom half of the league
table in the Kelvin Allander league, and the top half for the seniors league,
but were relegated in the Glasgow league. Our friendly matches as usual
provided opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Our
triples team of Bill Gilfillan, George McLaughlin and Alistair Gunn (replaced by
Frank Kennedy in the semifinal) reached the finals of the kelvin Allander Top
ten competition, but fell at the final hurdle.
October
The
Annual Dinner and Prizegiving was held in the clubhouse on 24th October, and a
few photos are shown below. Gents and Ladies Champions are Frank Kennedy and
Michelle Orr. Frank also won the Presidents trophy.
The
Presidents trophy for the ladies was won by Christina Kennedy (shown being
presented by President David Linley) and the Kennedys also won the mixed pairs,
presented by Liz Linley.
Pairs
winners Frank Kennedy (again!) and partner Bill Milroy were presented with
the trophy by Liz Linley, and the Men's Fours winners were Jim Gilchrist,
Alistair Craig, Alistair Gunn and George McLaughlin. Other winners and finalists
are shown above in the finals reports.
